A greek mythology figure, Menelaus, king of Sparta, had to defeat the shape shifting Proteus, known as the Old man of the sea. With his normal weapons of little use, "with each shift, Menelaus shifted, with each new challenge, he changed, clenching his legs tight around the necks of animals that appeared, or digging his fingers into the wooden limbs of trees, or wrapping his arms around swirling balls of mercurial fire." By adapting, Menelaus defeated the Old man of the sea.
